John Stillman is a lieutenant with the Philadelphia Police Department and commander of the cold case squad. A Vietnam combat veteran with some war-era stress as seen in "Honor" he has shown himself to be stern but caring boss. His daughter Janie was sexually assaulted when she was 18, though she and her mother urged John not to prosecute the perpetrator. She later married and had a son named Sean, though it was revealed in Blood on the Tracks that she was going to divorce her husband.
Due to his commitment to the job, John's marriage was very strained and eventually ended in divorce. His wife never forgave him for missing their daughter's birth due to the investigation of Tim Barnes' murder. His wife remarried, but got divorced again due to her husband's drinking. At some point Stillman had an affair with Diane Yates. His older brother is a Catholic priest. He also revealed on the episode Cargo that he used to worked on the same longshore port (where Mike Chulaski used to worked too) when he was 16 years old before he became a liutenant.
In the fifth season (beginning in September 2007), he took the month's unpaid leave meant for Scotty Valens, in order to keep him on the force. Stillman, having reflected on his place in the police force during his suspension, later decided to retire, though later was inspired to return to duty when Lilly convinced him to help in a case ("Family 8108").
Throughout season 7, John had an ongoing feud with Patrick Doherty who never forgave Stillman for putting his son behind bars, and constantly covered for fellow corrupt officials.
