Jane Everett is the victim in "Breaking News". She is the daughter of Margie Everett and was an anchorwoman for WCNU Channel 7 news who mostly did puff pieces. Jane shared the anchor spot with Mort Ackerson, though they did not get along. She got the job thanks to her relationship with her producer Nathan Kravet, who Jane knew since she was in college.

While filming a Halloween fundraiser thrown by Shaw Plastics, Jane noticed an argument between Shaw PR man David Wyatt and an unknown man. She and her cameraman Clay Murphy tracked the man down and identified him as Evan Briggs, who used to work for Shaw until he got fired for failing a drug test. He also has a wife dying from cancer. Jane informed him that he failed the test because he was taking Percocet. She also found out that Evan's wife is not the only one at Shaw who has cancer.

Jane somehow got David on camera to spill that Shaw's employees were getting sick from asbestos exposure. She promised Evan that she would break the story. Jane got a call from David to meet at the park but instead met Nathan, who told told her to give him the interview tape since he was working for Shaw. Disgusted by her mentor's corruption, Jane tried to leave but Nathan strangled her to death. Mort's career was saved by covering Jane's murder.

In 2009, Tory Roberts discovered archival footage of Jane taking David's phone call hours before she died, leading to the case being reopened. The cold case team found David's interview tape at Jane's mother's house. In the end, both Nathan and Andrew were arrested. Margie watched Andrew's arrest on television. Evan watched in person and saw Jane's spirit one last time.
