Emma Vine is the victim in "Debut". She was a debutante who was murdered the night of her debut in 1968.

Emma wanted to be an astronomer but her gender prevented from pursuing such a career. After her father Timothy got on the chosen list of astronauts for the moon landing, she and her mother, Lillian Vine, were invited into the country club. Emma was being pushed by Lillian to go through the debut to help overcome their modest background. However, she saw through the superficiality, nastiness, and falsehoods of the other debutantes and came to despise the high society she was expected to enter. Emma retained her progressive values and wanted to make something of herself with her newfound privilege.

Emma struck up a romance with Travis Whitman, who agreed to escort her to the ball as a favor. The two bonded over their secrets, with Travis revealing his Jewish background and Emma admitting her father was pulled from the moon landing listing. However, she eventually rejected Travis too when she found him laughing along the others' anti-Semitic jokes to retain his status in the country club. In response to Emma calling him a phony, Travis angrily pushed her down the stairs and killed her.

In 2006, Travis' wife died after having a seizure and falling down the stairs. Lillian wanted her daughter's case reopened because she believed Travis has killed again. At the end, Travis was proven innocent of his wife's death but he confessed to killing Emma. Lillian imagines seeing Emma on their porch at her telescope in the epilogue.
