Open to New Haven, CT November 15, 2000. "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down is playing. We see a man being escorted from the courthouse and a woman looking on. There are lots of reporters and protesters. A woman (Anna) and man (Greg) are talking watching. She tells him he should have a better wife. A man takes Greg to give a statement the man says his name is ADA Harold Mott and introduces Greg to the reporters as Lead Prosecutor Greg Vizcaino. He states to the reporters that the case is about Stacey Hall who was murdered when she was out on a jog. He says the man that was lead away was Antonio Mendez and they are trying him for her murder. We see Stacey's parents grieving in the background.
Cut to Greg laying on the ground in the rain at night dead. And then his boxes being put into storage.
Present Day: Jeffries and Vera are telling Lilly and Valens about a seminar they just went to and we see Anna, Greg's wife coming out from an office talking to Detective Gil Sherman. After she leaves he tells the others about the case. How the case was cold from the beginning because Greg showed up 150 miles away from where he lived. Previous ADA Mott is now dragging Vizcaino thru the dirt because he's running for State treasurer and a reporter found out that $10,000 back around the time of the murder went missing from the DA's office and Mott is blaming Vizcaino. Greg's wife was coming to tell Detective Sherman that Greg was no thief.
Valens, Lilly and Stillman are looking over the case in storage. They want to look into Greg possibly stealing the money as a motive, Vera comes in and states that Mott took over the Stacey case after Greg died, won the case and it made him a household name which could also be a motive. Stillman sends them to New Haven to interview Mott.
Mott states that his best guess that Greg stole the money is because he was going through a hard time at the end because the case wasn't going well and he was all over the map, distracted at work. He stated Greg would disappear for hours at a time. He said the day before Greg disappeared he knew of one time where he had gone.
Flashback to Greg and Mott arguing at work because Greg went to visit the defendant without his lawyer and Greg said he couldn't talk about it and had to leave.
Back to present Mott says he never told anyone about Greg visiting the defendant because a mistrial would've been declared. He says Greg wasn't ready for that big of a case and he self-destructed.
We see Jeffries and Vera at the prison talking to Antonio Mendez. They want to know why Greg came to see him that night. He says it was because of his suicide attempt. He said Greg told him he needed to stay alive. He said it didn't make a difference he recounted his confession because he still got life in prison.
Vera and Jeffries are now talking to the detective (Detective Sal Martin) who got the confession. He shows them the tape. Valens and Lilly show up and ask them about Greg's behavior at the time of trial. He said he was under a lot of pressure. When they asked why he would need 10K and Martin said he had a bad habit.
Flashback to Detective Martin catching Greg paying a man on the street money (a dealer) who asks him when the next installment was going to be. He says he told Greg he won't tell anyone what he saw, that Greg was "Just walking the murder scene again down the street) but to not be so obvious.
Present Day He tells them that he saw Greg with the dealer a lot, his name was Kiki Solano. Word on the street was that Greg had a bad cocaine habit.
Cut to Lilly, Valens and Jeffries at a diner discussing the case. Vera tells them that detective Martin told them they could find the dealer at Eden Park. Jeffries and Valens leave to go there and drop Lilly off at New Haven PD> They leave Valens at the diner.
Jeffries and Valens find Kiki. He said Vizcaino and him went to grade school together. He said he wasn't worried about Greg's debts. He was worried about Greg being used at the DA.
