Baby Blues is the 4th case of the fourth season of the series and is the 73rd overall.

Description[]

While looking through old records, Frannie finds a case of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) from 1982 that may not be what it appears to be. The baby's hair was wet, suggesting she was drowned. The detectives look into the case and must question the family, which came apart after the baby's death, to find out what happened. Meanwhile, Lilly visits Ray in the hospital after he's attacked.

Synopsis[]

February 16, 1982 Molly Felice is seen doing a presentation on the "modern woman" to men, who is supposed to handle everything from being a mother, being a wife, and being a housekeeper, and how people benefit from being born by such women. A man walks up to her, with an infant in his hands and another kid, Devon, next to him, presubably her husband. The babysitter quit, says Roger, and he needs to get to court. He leaves his kids at his wife's work place and she resumes her work. Her coworker says perhaps her husband should screw his own career, not Molly's. Both save the presentation and convince the spectators.

Later, Roger, Molly and their elder son are seen on the funeral of her child infant Iris, who is asumed to have died due to Sudden Infant Death.

Present Frannie, the department's medical examiner, has found a case she wants reopened. She says that back then coroners did not have the knowledge we have today, and that the infant had wet hair. SIDS usually looks like other causes of death, but it does not wet the hair, so she is certain there must be something else involved. Lilly ignores a call from Ray. John is hesitant to bring up the case to the parents again, and Lilly reassures him a murder is reason enough.

Stillmann goes over the file and Valens states there was no signs of abuse. There was a snow storm this night as well as a babysitter. The parents divorced, but are still around. They decide to visit them. Kat and Lilly talk to Molly and claim Iris could have been killed in the storm. Molly talks about the nanny and the housekeeper had access, but would not have hurt her. She explains having children was hard and Iris was delicate, and as such requested more attention.

Flashback Roger and Molly are having dinner, and they starts flirting. Molly insists on checking in with the baby before they meet in bed, but Roger counters that she is fine now, as the doctors have said. He wants some alone time, when Iris is heard crying upstairs, and Devon informs his parents about this. Roger is remorseful and wishes to go back to how things were.

Present Molly says they could not go back, and this happened months before Iris died. When she did, the relationship of Molyl and Roger also died. Will and Scotty interrogate Roger and comment on him not wanting another child. He tells them how sleep-deprived he was, but still cared deeply.

Flashback He is seen holding Iris when a police officer is taking her away. Devon is confused and starts whimpering, and Roger sends him away. Both parents are mourning her daughter and blame each other.

Present Roger mentions the room being very cold and the window being open, although Molly always made sure windows and doors would be locked. Devon, now and adult, gets a visit by Nick and Lilly. He says his parents store her things away and refused talking about Iris as if she hadn't existed. He kept a photo of the two of them though. Nick states Devon's room was just above Iris', and he says no one could have hurt her. Then he mentions one of the helpers, the nanny.

Flashback Devon screams for Marta, the nanny, he cannot turn on his sister's mobile. He finds her kneeling in front of the bathtub, crying and praying, Iris next to him. The bathtub is filling up with water. Marta tells him about the need to save Iris from hell so she needs to get baptized. She then lowers Iris into the water.

Present No one knows about this baptism, and Lilly tells him it could be his sister was drown. Kat and Scotty get over the files when Will calls them to his place: there is a SID support group, where Marta was in. He suspects that perhaps Marta is not a baptist, but a murderer. Marta gets a visit by Scotty and Kat and they ask about her dead son. She is mad at them for asking and wants them to state the fact he died in his sleep. When they mention the baptism, she says she loves children, and was away anyway when Iris. But she mentions the babysitter being "not a good idea".

Flashback Two teenagers are found in the living room, drinking and making out, by Marta. One of them is Brie, the babysitter, who also tends to leave the windows open. Devon gets downstairs and claims his water tastes weird...when he also says the water in Iris' bottle is also green, Brie tries to shut him up. She explains it was just cough syrup to make them sleepy, and threathens Marta with her father, a lawyer, who could deport her.

Present Being afraid of telling the truth and leaving the kids alone, she did not tell the police. Kat, having previously worked in the drug deparment, concludes if the baby had an overdose of cough syrup, she would have sweat. Brie is now visited by Rush and Jeffries and explains her parenting with vodka like her mother did is not a big deal. Her boyfriend broke up with her so she didn't have a reson to bring him over again. She also says the babysitter knows all the dirty secrets, and reveals what she knows.

Flashback Brie is seen with Iris in a stroller, slowly sneaking up on Roger and a woman talking. He claims it was a mistake, and the woman calls him a liar and she kisses him. The woman is Molly's coworker who claims she only cares about the kids and not Roger anymore. Roger gets defensive, and tells her to leave. He then spots Brie lurking.

Present A few night before Iris' death, this conversation happened. She suspects Stella being the murderer. Lilly's phone rings, it is Ray, but she ignores him. Rush and Jeffries leave her, and then she picks up Ray's call which stresses her out. She visits him in the hospital and she is sorry about not answering his calls. Ray tells the story of men coming up from behind him, but he did not call her for that. He is grateful for her visit and she says she owes him, but he rejects that and just asks her to stay by his side.

John and Scotty interrogate Roger and his lies about his family working just fine and him loving Molly. He seems confused, but they confront him with his affair with Stella. He tells them how in love he was with his wife and kids, and Iris' death caused cracks. Roger tells them he has punished himself already for her death and there is nothing worse a court could do. Meanwhile, Lilly and Nick are talking to Stella about the affair and how she angrily stomped away when he cut her off. She claims Molly and Roger were her best friends and she was upset about Iris's death, too. She then says there was something she could have prevented hadn't she been so distracted by Roger.

Flashback The women are rehearsing their presentation when Iris starts crying. Stella asks what is wrong with Molly as she seems distracted, to which she answers she suspects Roger hiding something from her. She then says perhaps she pushed Roger away, which Stella denies. Molly confesses she is feeling lonely and that something is wrong, that Roger is visiting Iris at night taking to himself to "not hurt her". Stella dismisses her by saying Molly is just imagining things, and they both agree it's probably just and imagination.

Present Stella did not believe Molly and she also did not want to, as she wanted Roger to remain a good person. Nick asks when this happened, and she reveals it was the day before Iris's died. Valens talks to Roger one on one, telling the story about the baby monitor and him speaking to himself. Roger tries to prevent the story from unfolding, but the talks about an accident happening. Valens asks him to continue speaking, and Roger cries saying "he was just a little boy", talking about Devon.

Flashback Devon is seen at Iris' crib, and when Roger meets him, he tells him about the baby needing a baptism. When the boy remarks Iris is not breathing, Roger picks her up and tries to wake her. He panically tries to wake her, when Devon asks if he has hurt the sister, but he tells him she is fine.

Present Roger tells him his son was a strong kid and that he should be arrested, not Devon. Valens asks if Molly knew about this night, and he lied to her, a lso making Devon lie to her. He admits this destroyed their marriage. Lilly and Kat meet with Devon, who is seen with his wife and daughter. They want to interrogate him, and he says it's fine since he can't live like this anymore. He says he is responsible for her death, saying he does not remember clearly, and refers to the baptism. Kat presses him about what he knows, and he talks about the mobile playing and it being cold. Devon could not reach the mobile, so they conclude someone must have been in the room with him. He is confused as Kat tells him maybe the truth is more hurtful than his memory. Devon remembers he did not bathe Iris, as his mother was in the rocking chair with her.

Flashback Molly is seen trying to calm Iris down, talking to herself and claiming to be a bad mother. She says she is wrong herself and is staring outside the window, where the storm is unfolding. She opens the window, fascinated by the snow, and asks Devon to kiss the baby good bye. Molly tells him she loves him, and in a manic moment carries her baby outside. Devon is left crying.

Present Devon says he didn't expect to see her again, to which Lilly states that Molly must have wanted to die as well. Kat thanks him, and Devon is confused as to his mother's actions. Molly gets another visit by Lilly, where they meet in her nursery. Lilly tells her about life being hard as a mother of two with a job, a marriage that was falling apart, and a job she couldn't work properly in. Lilly implies Molly doing terrible things to her baby because of post-partum psychosis, an illness affecting mostly women (but can also affect men) where they see danger lurking everywhere and make irrational decisions. Molly says she does not know what happened to Iris, and she only knows she snow was a sign as her baby was worn during snowfall.

Flashback Molly is seen taking into her garden with Iris in her arms. She lies down with her on the lawn, snow falling onto them. When she wakes up to Devon crying out, she realizes Iris had frozen to death.

Present Molly is being arrested. Will and Frannie change the cause of death to "homicide". Marta is seen helping out parents who lost their child to SID. Devon, now being able to carry his daughter, visits Iris' grave with his parents. Lilly is seen kneeling at her grave, snow falling.
